Search the question and you get a flat answer. The electrical code requires a garbage disposal to have its own dedicated circuit.
Ask a licensed electrician and you get the opposite. On the professional code forums the same reply has come back for twenty years. No section of the NEC names garbage disposals and hands them a dedicated branch circuit.
Then an inspector arrives at a jobsite, opens the code book, and requires one anyway.
Nobody in that scene is lying. The question has no single answer because four separate things decide it. The code edition the jurisdiction adopted. The installation instructions that form part of the product’s listing. The unit’s rated load. Whatever else sits on that branch circuit.
One of those four is a factory document. It is the one we control, and it is the one nobody explains to the buyer.
What 210.23 actually says about sharing
Start with the section that gets quoted at anyone asking about the garbage disposal circuit breaker.
210.23 governs permissible loads on multiple-outlet branch circuits. It appears as 210.23(A)(2) in the 2014 through 2020 editions. The 2023 NEC moved the same sentence to 210.23(B)(2).
The main clause is the one everybody knows. The total rating of utilization equipment fastened in place must not exceed 50 percent of the branch-circuit ampere rating.
Now the qualifier that follows it: where lighting units, cord-and-plug-connected utilization equipment not fastened in place, or both, are also supplied.
That is a condition. A disposer bolted to a sink flange is fastened in place. A built-in dishwasher is fastened in place. Feed only those two from the circuit and the condition never fires. The 50 percent ceiling then applies to neither of them. JADE Learning’s code course reads it the same way. The limitation engages only where the circuit also supplies lighting, or receptacles for portable equipment.
Nothing about that clears the installation. Conductor sizing, overcurrent protection, appliance and motor-load rules and the listed instructions all still apply. What it clears is one specific misreading.
That misreading is everywhere. A contractor on Mike Holt’s forum described a 15A circuit carrying an 8.1A dishwasher and a 3.2A disposer. The inspector failed the job. His reasoning: the dishwasher alone drew more than half the circuit. The 50 percent number was accurate. The circuit contained nothing that triggers the clause he was reading from.
There is one prohibition that does hold, and it gets less attention. The two small-appliance branch circuits a kitchen is required to have shall have no other outlets. A disposer cannot ride on those. Electricians on the forums enforce that one without argument, which is a useful signal about which rules are actually contested and which are not.
Where the manual gets its force
The section that decides this says nothing about disposers.
NEC 110.3(B): equipment that is listed, labeled, or both, or identified for a use shall be installed and used in accordance with any instructions included in the listing, labeling, or identification.
Read the scope carefully. It is narrower than most summaries of it. An installation requirement forming part of the listing or the labeling can be enforced in the field. A sentence of marketing copy in a brochure does not acquire that standing by being printed.
422.16(B)(1) routes back through the same document. A disposer can be cord-and-plug connected with a flexible cord — one “identified as suitable in the installation instructions of the appliance manufacturer.” The cord runs 18 to 36 inches. The receptacle stays accessible. The plug is a grounding type. Whether the unit can be plugged in at all depends on what the factory wrote.
One manufacturer’s published support page states that its disposers require a 120V individual, properly grounded branch circuit. It specifies a 15A breaker or time-delay fuse. It then sends the installer to the rating tag on the unit for the actual amperage.
That requirement belongs to that manufacturer’s products. It does not describe every disposer sold, and it settles nothing for anyone else’s units. The sentence exists, a factory wrote it, and an installer in the field will treat it as binding. Those three facts are the whole point.
The word we chose
Our manual says we recommend a separate circuit for the disposer, and a GFCI or equivalent protective device on the disposer receptacle.
Recommend. I want to be direct about why that verb and not the other one.
We build the machine. We do not employ the electrician. We do not sit on any country’s wiring committee. We cannot see the panel in a kitchen we will never enter.
A requirement written into a listed installation instruction travels into every jurisdiction that adopts the NEC. It lands at a sink nobody from this factory has inspected. It lands on a circuit nobody from this factory has measured. And it costs someone a wire run, a breaker slot and the labor to pull it. On every unit. Permanently.
The recommendation carries the same safety judgment. It leaves the sizing decision with the person holding the wire strippers, which is where that decision already lives.

Row three is the expensive one, and it is the row most importers ship without noticing.
Why we recommend the protective device instead of betting on the code edition
GFCI on the disposer receptacle has flipped between code editions.
The 2017 NEC said the six-foot measurement could not pass through a door. A receptacle inside the sink cabinet therefore fell outside the rule. The 2020 edition removed that barrier. The measurement now runs through the cabinet door, and the receptacle under the sink lands back inside the six feet.
Same receptacle. Same sink. Opposite answer, three years apart.
Which edition your destination jurisdiction adopted is not something we can see from here. So our manual does not bet on it. GFCI, or an equivalent protective device, on the receptacle that feeds the unit — written as a floor that survives the next revision cycle.
The rating the installer reads off the garbage disposal
Watch the sequence. The electrician gets on his back under the sink and reads the plate on the unit. The support page quoted above tells him to do exactly that. It is the default move in every forum thread I have read on the subject.
So the rated current has to be legible on the appliance, on the surface he is actually going to look at.
The importer needs the same number earlier, and in a different document. Rated current belongs in the quotation, next to the voltage and the plug type. A number that first appears on a carton in a warehouse arrives after the wire is already in the studs.
Both are order fields. Both get settled long before anyone opens a cabinet door under a sink.
Horsepower will not give you the number. It does not carry the branch-circuit current, because current depends on rated voltage, motor design and marked input. Two units badged 3/4 HP can present different loads to the same breaker. Read the rated voltage and the marked current for the actual model, then get both into the RFQ.
The circuit goes in before the disposer is chosen
Rough-in comes first. Wire goes into the studs while the appliance package is still a line of allowances in a spec book.
A contractor on the Mike Holt forum walked through that sequence. The branch circuits were roughed in before anyone held the disposer’s nameplate. His conclusion: run one dedicated circuit for the disposer, another for the dishwasher, and be covered whatever shows up in the carton.
A second electrician, in a different thread, had shared circuits for years without trouble. Then a spec sheet crossed his desk with a 13A disposer on it. He stopped sharing.
Both men made a rational call with the information they had. Both priced in a circuit the code did not require. The number that would have settled it had not reached them.
That gap is a sequencing problem in the paperwork. It closes the moment rated current lands in the PI instead of on the carton.
Why the North American answer does not transfer to 230V markets
Our manual does not change by market. One default configuration, one text, unless a customer commissions their own.
In August 2025 a buyer in Saudi Arabia emailed us. Retail, selling into Europe and Russia. He asked whether our units needed a dedicated circuit, and what leakage protection we required of him.
We told him we impose no dedicated-circuit requirement on the unit. We recommend a residual-current protected socket for the disposer receptacle. Recommended, not required. The same sentence that sits in the manual, sent to one buyer in one email.
His market frames the whole thing differently. “Dedicated circuit” is North American vocabulary. One published installation manual for disposers sold into a UK-pattern market asks for a double-pole switch above the worktop. Minimum 3 mm contact separation between the poles. That is an isolation requirement, and it sits alongside overcurrent and residual-current rules a local electrician reads together.
I don’t know how each of those authorities enforces isolation on a retail installation. I would have to ask his electrician to find out. What I can give him is the configuration we ship, and which electrical package belongs to which destination market.
What to lock before rough-in
Four fields decide what a dedicated circuit for a garbage disposal actually costs you after the container lands.
The verb in the electrical paragraph of your manual. A requirement inside a listed installation instruction is enforceable through 110.3(B). A recommendation is not. Open your own manual and find out which one you are shipping.
The rated current, marked on the appliance. That is the surface the electrician reads, under a sink, on his back.
The rated current, in the quotation. Carton panels and catalogue pages arrive too late to change a wire run.
What else is on that branch circuit. A dedicated receptacle does not prove that the branch circuit is dedicated. Only the panel schedule answers that.
Here is our line. We write the manual, we mark the unit, and we tell you what it draws. We do not size the branch circuit in your customer’s kitchen. We do not read local amendments on your behalf. We do not tell an electrician how to do his job. That is why our manual says recommend.

FAQ
Does a garbage disposal need its own circuit breaker?
No NEC section names disposers and assigns them one. But a requirement written into a product’s listed installation instructions becomes enforceable through 110.3(B), which makes the answer model-specific. Read the manual for the unit you are actually buying, not a blog about disposers in general.
Can a dishwasher and garbage disposal share a 20-amp circuit?
210.23 does not automatically prohibit it. Both appliances are fastened in place, so the 50 percent limitation does not engage on a circuit feeding only those two. Whether a real installation qualifies still turns on both nameplate loads, the remaining branch-circuit and motor-load rules, the listed instructions, and local amendments. Neither one can go on the kitchen small-appliance circuits.
What size breaker does a 1 HP disposal need?
Horsepower alone will not give you the branch-circuit current. Use the rated voltage and the current marked for that specific model. Why two units with the same HP badge draw different amps is here.
Is a dedicated outlet the same as a dedicated circuit?
No. A dedicated receptacle does not prove that the branch circuit is dedicated.
Does a 230V food waste disposer need a dedicated circuit?
That market asks about isolation and residual-current protection rather than a dedicated home run. We recommend an RCD-protected socket for the disposer receptacle. We do not require it, and we do not assess the circuit that is already in the wall.
