A search for an InSinkErator Badger 5 replacement returns pages that contradict each other. One describes a unit that comes with a power cord. Another describes one that has to be hardwired. The model name alone cannot settle which one you are looking at. The manufacturer’s own sheet says both are true at once.
The Badger 5 submittal sheet lists the unit as available with or without a factory-installed power cord. One name, two electrical builds, straight from the spec sheet. That is the first reason to stop treating “Badger 5” as a replacement instruction. Ask a buyer what they own and they name the model. Ask how it connects, how tall it is, or which mount it hangs on, and the model name has already stopped answering.
An InSinkErator Badger 5 replacement, sourced by an importer to sit where the old unit sat, is not a matter of matching a name. It is a matter of matching an interface. Those are different jobs, and the gap between them is where a “same spec” order turns into a plumbing call.

What the name leaves out
A model name carries two things reliably: the brand, and the grinding class. Badger 5 tells you 1/2 HP, continuous feed, induction motor. That is real information, and it is where most published guides stop.
It is also where the installer’s problem starts. Several fields never travel with the name. The body height under the sink. The diameter that has to clear the cabinet and the trap. The height of the discharge outlet. How the unit connects to power. Where the dishwasher inlet sits. Two units can share a horsepower rating, or even belong to the same product family, without matching every installation interface.
So the useful question is not “is it a Badger 5.” It is a different question: what does the thing under the sink actually measure. What follows walks the fields that decide a swap. It starts with the one that trips people first.
Which power connection did you actually get
The Badger 5 ships in more than one electrical build. The manufacturer’s submittal sheet states it plainly: available with or without a factory-installed cord. There is also a separate cord kit, the CRD-00, sold on its own for the versions that arrive bare.
Read the buyer reviews and the confusion is right there. One owner opens the box expecting a cord and finds none, because that build was meant to be wired directly to a switched circuit. Another reuses the cord from the old unit because the new one came without one. The grind is the same across these builds. The connection is not.
For a replacement, that one field decides how clean the swap is. Say the old unit plugged into a switched outlet and the new one arrives set for hardwiring. The install then needs a cord kit, an approved wiring path, or a different SKU. If the old install was hardwired and the new unit shows up with a molded cord, the site may need a switched receptacle instead. Neither is a defect. Both are a mismatch nobody specified.

Horsepower is a grinding class, not an interface
One correction in passing, because it drives a lot of bad swaps. Matching 1/2 HP does not match the installation. Horsepower describes the grind, not the body envelope, the mount, or the electrical connection. Two units at the same rating can present a different load and a different fit. “Twist-on” only covers one motion
The other shortcut worth naming: a twist-on mount only helps when the new unit belongs to the same mount family already on the sink. The Badger 5 sheet notes that its mounting collar configuration is a registered trademark. That is a reminder: a mounting collar is a specific engineered shape, not a generic interface. Three fastening points do not by themselves mean two collars share geometry, locking tabs, gasket stack or throat size. Reusing an existing mount is a question of whether the new unit’s mount system genuinely matches the collar already on the sink. Measurement confirms that, not a bolt count. The fields to measure before a swap
Here is the checklist an importer can source against. The manufacturer’s sheet supplies some of these figures directly. Others are not on the public sheet, and have to come off the actual unit with a tape measure. The point is to know which is which.

The manufacturer sheet supplies some values. Mount geometry, maximum diameter and the exact power build may still require SKU-level or physical verification.
The discharge centerline is the quiet one. The Badger 5 sheet puts it at six inches from the bottom of the sink to the centerline of the outlet. If your candidate unit’s outlet sits higher or lower than that, the waste arm no longer lines up and the P-trap gets rebuilt. The Spruce’s testing of other InSinkErator models makes the same point from the homeowner side. One install needed extra pipe-alignment work. Another had trouble seating the unit onto the mount. A standard 3-1/2 inch sink opening confirms the flange passes through the hole and nothing below it.
The dishwasher inlet has its own fitment check. On a unit set up for a dishwasher connection, the inlet is a knockout plug. It has to be driven out before the hose goes on. Leave it in place and the dishwasher cannot discharge through the disposer connection. On a unit with no dishwasher connection at all, there is nothing to knock out and nowhere to land the hose. Whether the inlet exists, and where it sits relative to the existing hose, is the sixth field. It is invisible on a horsepower line.
What we can hand you, and what needs a tape measure
Here is where our side of it sits. For a specific Major model, we can give you the same fields as measured numbers. Each is tied to a measurement basis and a drawing revision. We quote one model, not the range as a whole, since our AC, DC and BLDC platforms differ in size and mount. That covers body height, maximum diameter, discharge outlet centerline, mount family, the splash-guard dimension for that mount, the dishwasher inlet, and the market power connection.
What we do not do is tell you those numbers land where your old unit’s numbers were. We have not measured the unit under your customer’s sink. A published spec sheet is a starting reference, not a fit confirmation. That holds especially for mount geometry, which a shared bolt count does not settle. Put our measured figures for the exact model beside the manufacturer’s sheet for the old unit. The matches and the gaps show themselves.

Does the Badger 5 come with a power cord?
It depends on the build. The manufacturer’s sheet lists it as available with or without a factory-installed cord, and a separate cord kit exists for the bare versions. Check which build you have before you assume the next unit connects the same way.
Can I reuse my existing mount?
Only if the new unit’s mount system genuinely matches the collar already on your sink. A twist-on action assumes the collar fits to begin with, and a matching bolt count does not prove matching geometry. Confirm the mount by measurement, then the motion.
Are Badger 5, 500, 5XL and 5XP interchangeable?
The model names alone do not establish that. Their published plumbing dimensions may run close, but a name is not a spec. Should I repair a leaking Badger 5 or replace it?
